Investigation into the death of a dingo on K’gari

A man who allegedly used a speargun to cause the death of a dingo on K’gari (formerly Fraser Island) is being investigated for offences under the Nature Conservation Act 1992.

It is alleged that on 19 April, the incident occurred after the dingo was lingering around his campsite at night.

The man advised the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation about the dingo’s death the following day and has fully cooperated with department officials.

The department’s investigation is ongoing. Under the Nature Conservation Act 1992, it is an offence to deliberately harm, interfere or interact with dingoes.

Visitors to K’gari are reminded to ‘Be dingo-safe!’ at all times:

• Always stay close (within arm’s reach) of children and young teenagers
• Always walk in groups and carry a stick.
• Camp in fenced areas where possible
• Do not run. Running or jogging can trigger a negative dingo interaction
• Never feed dingoes
• Lock up food stores and iceboxes (even on a boat)
• Never store food or food containers in tents, and
• Secure all rubbish, fish and bait.
