Woman bitten by dingo – Lake McKenzie – K’gari

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) is investigating an incident on K’gari (formerly known as Fraser Island) after a woman was bitten on the leg by a dingo in the unfenced area at Lake McKenzie.

Around 5:30am on 7 October 2024, a walking group participant was bitten on the back of the leg, causing bruising to the calf muscle. Other members of her group used walking poles to try and move the dingo on.

It has been reported that the untagged female dingo was aggressive, growling, barking, jumping, lunging and attempting to bite at the walking poles.

QPWS rangers increased patrols in the area and will attempt to identify the dingo involved.

Visitors to K’gari are reminded to Be dingo-safe! at all times:

• Always stay close (within arm’s reach) of children and young teenagers
• Always walk in groups and carry a stick
• Never feed dingoes
• Camp in fenced areas where possible
• Do not run. Running or jogging can trigger a negative dingo interaction
• Lock up food stores and iceboxes (even on a boat)
• Never store food or food containers in tents, and
• Secure all rubbish, fish and bait.
