How to apply

Found a role you're interested in? Great! Here's how to get your application in front of the selection panel:

  1. Review the job details – Make sure you understand the role requirements and responsibilities in the position description (PD).
  2. Prepare your application – Tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight the experience and skills you have which relate to what the selection panel are looking for.
  3. Submit your application – Follow the instructions provided in the job ad and PD to lodge your application.

We’ve put together some helpful information below to guide you through the process. Good luck!

    Stage 1 – Application (online)

The preferred way to apply is online via the Smart jobs and careers website.

    • Create a My SmartJob account (if you don’t already have one).
    • Upload your application and include all documents requested in the job ad or PD.

With a My SmartJob account, you can track applications, update your details, and withdraw if needed.

Tip: Don’t rely on AI technology when applying or preparing for further assessment, as our processes may include assessment without notice to test your knowledge and capability.

Tip: Applications close at 12am (midnight) on the advertised closing date. Late applications are not accepted unless approved by the contact person listed on the PD.

    Your diversity information

When applying via the Smart jobs and careers website, providing diversity information is optional. You can choose Prefer not to say for any question if you do not want to provide this information.

Your responses are managed separately from your application and are not provided to the selection panel. They are used in a de-identified way to help identify trends, monitor representation and support initiatives that build accessible, safe, respectful and inclusive workplaces.

Visit For government to learn why we ask for this information and how your data is used and protected.

If a role requires specific lived experience, background or identity information

Some roles require applicants to have a particular lived experience, cultural background or diversity attribute. If this applies, the position description will explain what information you need to provide as part of your application.

Have a question about the role?

    • Contact the person listed on the position description. They can clarify duties, answer your questions and help you decide if the role is right for you.

    Need help?

    Stage 2 – Shortlisting

Once applications close, the selection panel reviews all submissions to assess:

    • Eligibility and suitability for the role.
    • Alignment with the What we are looking for criteria in the position description.
    • Your skills, experience, and how you've approached previous roles.
    • How you might contribute to our culture of equity, diversity, respect, and inclusion.

Shortlisting is based entirely on the information you provide in your application and how it compares to that of the other applicants.

Stage 3 – Additional selection activities

If shortlisted, you may be asked to complete selection activities such as:

    • work samples or task assessments
    • interviews (face-to-face or virtual)
    • presentations or practical tasks.

This is your chance to ask questions and decide if the role and team are right for you. Check out our short ‘Ace your interview’ module to learn why we’ve simplified our process and why authenticity matters.

    Stage 4 – Referee checking

We’ll notify you before we contact your referees. Ideally at least one referee should be a current or recent supervisor. If a referee raises issues that could affect a decision, we’ll let you know and give you the chance to respond before a final decision is made.

Stage 5 – Offer of employment and onboarding

If you’re the preferred candidate, we’ll:

    1. make a verbal offer
    2. follow up with a written offer that outlines your classification and pay point.

    Negotiating pay

You may be able to negotiate a higher pay point based on qualifications and experience. Discuss this with the Panel Chair once an offer is made and they’ll consider any additional skills or experience you bring.

    Onboarding

After acceptance, you’ll get an induction and onboarding program: meet the team, set up systems and access required training. Welcome!

    Myth vs reality

    Myth

My application needs to be very detailed and address specific selection criteria.

    Reality

We’ve simplified the process. Generally, we want your resume and a 1–2 page cover letter that explains how your capability and contribution to diversity, equity, respect and inclusion make you a strong candidate. Always check the position description for any role-specific requirements.

    Myth

An internal person is already guaranteed the job.

    Reality

The job may be vacant or temporarily filled by a current employee. However, this does not guarantee them the position. All applicants, including current department employees, must go through the same process. They will also be assessed against all other applicants. If you want the job and believe you have the required skills and abilities, you should apply.
