The Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation is proposing to make a number of amendments to the protected area estate and is seeking views in consideration of the Human Rights Act 2019, including Aboriginal peoples’ and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ cultural rights.

The proposals include several redescriptions of parts of the protected area estate using contemporary survey and mapping technology and standards, for example, providing a more accurate area calculation or simplifying the lot on plan description using a new administrative plan, without changing the boundaries on-ground.

The aim of dedicating and declaring new or amending existing protected areas is to preserve, to the greatest extent possible, the area’s natural condition, to protect the area’s cultural resources and values and to provide for ecologically sustainable activities and ecotourism.
