Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is proposing to construct an additional road bridge between Bribie Island and the mainland, near the southern end of Pumicestone Passage within the Moreton Bay Marine Park. To allow for a marine park permit to be considered for the major works required to construct the proposed bridge, TMR has sought an amendment to the Marine Parks (Moreton Bay) Zoning Plan 2019 to modify the current zoning and establish a works area within the proposed bridge corridor.

Under section 64 of the Marine Parks (Moreton Bay) Zoning Plan 2019 the Chief Executive of the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) gives notice of a proposal by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to amend the Marine Parks (Moreton Bay) Zoning Plan 2019 within an approximate 111m wide corridor across Pumicestone Passage to:

  • change the marine park zone within this corridor from Conservation Park zone to Habitat Protection zone; and
  • establish a works area over the corridor.

The corridor in which these amendments are proposed surrounds, and includes, the existing Bribie Island Road bridge that extends from Sandstone Point on the mainland to Bellara on Bribie Island.

The purpose of the proposed zoning plan amendments is to allow for a marine park permit to be considered for the major works that are required to construct an additional four lane bridge on the northern side of the existing Bribie Island bridge.

The Moreton Bay Marine Park zoning plan prohibits the approval of major works in all zones except Habitat Protection and General Use zones. Further, within a Habitat Protection or General Use zone, major works can only be permitted if a works area has first been established, in accordance with the requirements detailed in Sections 62-65 of the Marine Parks (Moreton Bay) Zoning Plan 2019, over the area of the proposed works.

Further information on the bridge proposal and proposed amendments to the Marine Parks (Moreton Bay) Zoning Plan 2019, including a plan and Fact Sheet are available.

Interested persons are invited to make a written submission to TMR about these proposed amendments to the Marine Parks (Moreton Bay) Zoning Plan 2019. A copy of all submissions received will be provided by TMR to DETSI.
