Breadth of opportunities

So I think many people think you've got to be a scientist or a Ranger to work at the department, but that really isn't the case.

I have come from housing, I have a degree in English like it's I come from Scotland.

My skill set that I have learned throughout my previous jobs has really helped me within this position.

You could do project work, you could do HR, finance, field work, ocean, land, sea, air.

There's a whole range of stuff.

So no matter if you're a blue collar, white collar, or if you don't even really know what career you want to do, it's a great place to start at.

I love dinosaurs and have done since I was a child.

So I was looking that my ideal job would be something

to do with fossils and something to do with adventure straight from the get go to be sitting down.

I was getting to see all the photos of David Attenborough visiting the site.

You can, you know, gain experience right across your professional skill set.

It's great to see people be able to move around and gain that breadth of experience, which can be a little bit more difficult in a private setting.

Literally every day there's something exciting to do with the fossils, new discoveries about the fossils.

I'm kept in this email chain with all these palaeontologists seeing about all these new discoveries.

And I'm like I can't believe I'm part of this chain.

Like, why are they letting me know of it?

It's so cool. My ability to get where I am and it's been largely

grounded in those opportunities, going out and doing those short term opportunities, relieving or backfilling for people while they're on leave and leaving a lasting impression.

And I can continue that career progression and that, you know, skills expansion without necessarily losing, you know, my annual leave or my sick leave or even long service leave.

So being a part of the department's been really lovely.

It's kind of changed the way that I see the environment around us.

Even, you know, going for a hike on the weekend.

No matter your background, I think there is an opportunity for everyone at the department.
