Great Keppel Island Rejuvenation Project
Funding is being used to deliver a number of common user infrastructure projects that will support investment into the rejuvenation of Great Keppel island.
Common user infrastructure projects were identified following investigations into infrastructure options and prioritisation by stakeholders as part of the Great Keppel Island (Woppa) Concept Master Plan. The plan was released on 23 April 2024.
The Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation is working closely with a number of delivery partners to progress these important infrastructure projects.
The Queensland Government has engaged Livingstone Shire Council to deliver planned upgrades with work underway to provide:
- a gateway precinct proposed to feature a visitor centre, arrival plaza with green space, amenities, yarning circle and landscaping
- boardwalks and improvements to walking tracks to provide better access around Fisherman’s Beach
- wayfinding and interpretative signage that incorporates Woppaburra heritage and culture to provide safe navigation.
With investment by the Queensland Government, Livingstone Shire Council is also delivering a new wastewater treatment plant and amenities for the island.
Maritime Safety Queensland has undertaken technical studies to improve maritime access to the island. The outcomes of these investigations are under consideration.
The Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation supported the Woppaburra Land Trust to complete a feasibility study for a Woppaburra Cultural Centre.
The former lease areas on Great Keppel Island are being managed by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development following their forfeiture in April 2023. Read more on the former lease areas.
