45 by 45: Getting Ecotourism Moving in Queensland
Destination 2045 is paving the way to 2045 by supporting 45 innovative ecotourism projects that will shape the future of ecotourism in Queensland. These projects embody a bold vision which will elevate regional tourism through world-class, immersive experiences that celebrate place, culture, and sustainability.
By focusing on smart design, protecting the environment and celebrating local places, these projects will make destinations across the state more appealing. They will boost tourism, encourage people to visit more regions, and create a world-class model for purpose-driven ecotourism.
What we are looking for:
Environmentally friendly, high value design
Projects that aim to actively preserve and highlight Queensland’s diverse ecosystems by encouraging environmentally friendly development.
This may include:
- smart waste management
- renewable energy use
- sustainable materials
- minimal habitat disturbance
Cultural and community partnership
We value genuine partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and projects that aim to create sustainable employment and business opportunities that benefit the surrounding regional community.
This might include:
- Indigenous-led experiences
- genuine collaboration with Traditional Custodians
- local job creation
- building regional skills and opportunities
World-class immersive experiences
Programs that showcase Queensland’s natural wonders through world-class, immersive and educational experiences. Facilities that are designed to blend harmoniously with the natural environment, reflecting long-term viability and strong sustainability standards.
This may include:
- educational and interpretive programs
- immersive nature-based experiences
- high standards of safety and visitor experience
- innovative presentations of natural habitats
- collaborations featuring modern or Indigenous art
Project pathways
The 45 by 45 initiative supports projects at various stages of development and a range of partnership models. Support could include streamlined approval processes and/or financial investment.
State-led with partnerships
These projects are fully planned, funded and managed by the Queensland Government, delivering measurable public value (social, economic and environmental outcomes) for Queensland. These Government-led projects may involve joint partnerships or investment with private or community stakeholders’ collaboration with external parties.Wholly private/investor-sector led
Projects in this category are led entirely by private investors. Government support is focused on facilitating smooth approval processes to help the proponent navigate regulatory requirements.Private/investor-led with Government financial support
Projects are led by the private sector but receive support from the Queensland Government through direct financial investment.
