Destination 2045 is paving the way to 2045 by supporting 45 innovative ecotourism projects that will shape the future of ecotourism in Queensland. Under the 45 by 45 ecotourism initiative, 8 priority projects are currently underway across 4 key regional tourism areas—the Whitsundays, Tropical North Queensland, Townsville, Gold Coast.
Current 45 by 45 ecotourism projects
Wangetti Trail
The Wangetti Trail will be around 94 kilometres from Palm Cove to Port Douglas in Tropical North Queensland.
Ngaro Track
The Ngaro Track in the Whitsundays was the first of the 45 by 45 ecotourism experiences to be completed and welcomes low-impact, multi-day guided commercial tours from April 2026.
Smithfield Mountain Bike Park
The Smithfield Mountain Bike Park Expansion will see an increase in the number of mountain biking tails to more than 85 kilometres, meeting the criteria to become a trail network of national significance.
Thorsborne Trail
Introduction of guided hikes on the Thorsborne Trail on Hinchinbrook Island will offer new and immersive walking experiences in Tropical North Queensland.
Whitsunday Skyway
The proposed Whitsunday Skyway includes a cableway and all-weather summit facility with views overlooking Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays.
Palm Island
The Palm Island Walking Trails project will attract visitors and showcase the area’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Lake Eacham
Upgrades to the Lake Eacham day use areas will improve visitor access and facilities.
Springbrook Master Plan
Under the Springbrook Masterplan, construction of a new Purling Brook Falls suspension bridge, new car park and track upgrades will enhance visitor experience and safety in this iconic World Heritage Area destination.
