What is ecotourism?
Ecotourism is responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and benefits local communities. It centres on education, sustainability, and minimising the environmental footprint of tourism activities, ensuring that visitors leave a positive impact on the ecosystems they explore.
45 ecotourism projects by 2045
We will announce 45 innovative ecotourism projects that will shape the future of ecotourism in Queensland. These projects will embody a bold vision that elevates regional tourism through world-class, immersive experiences that celebrate place, culture and sustainability.
By focusing on smart sustainable design, protecting the environment and celebrating local places, these projects will create more appealing destinations across the state. They will boost tourism, encourage people to visit more regions, and create a world-class model for purpose-driven ecotourism.
Projects identified as a 45 by 45 project can expect tailored project support, increased visibility and associated credibility.
Partnership models
The 45 by 45 initiative supports ecotourism projects at various stages of development. Projects will be identified progressively across a range of partnership models, which include:
- State-led with partnerships - projects that are fully planned, funded and managed by the Queensland Government, delivering measurable public value (social, economic and environmental outcomes) for Queensland. These Government-led projects may involve joint partnerships or investment with private or community stakeholders.
- Wholly private/investor-sector led - projects that are led entirely by private investors. Government support is focused on assisting with approval processes to help the proponent navigate regulatory requirements.
- Private/investor-led with Government financial support - projects that are led by the private sector but receive support from the Queensland Government through direct financial investment.
